Erice, Sicily
Located high above the Mediterranean Sea, roughly 2,400 feet above the main highway, this town was reached late in the day, close to 4:00 pm. The time could not have better for me and my love of deep shadows, extreme tones, shapes, and high contrast.
The sun etched through the narrow streets, carving its passage onto the ways, doors and ornaments as “Sole” made its way into the western sky and dip below the horizon.
Many main streets in Sicily are named after Giuseppe Maria Garibaldor or as in this case Vittorio Emanuele. The main street rose high, steep and the cobblestones street did not make it easier to hike to the top. It was worth the effort, shortly after reaching the apex, the sun moved to far behind the old city to impact my eye.
